We Refuse to Sell Tallow in a 2 oz Jar. Here Are the 6 Tricks Other Brands Use to Overcharge You.
Tallow went viral, and so did $20 thimble-sized jars. Here are six things to check before you pay for any tallow balm, each with a quick way to spot it. We hold ourselves to this list too.
1. The Thimble Jar
What it is: A $40 jar that holds 2 oz or less. The jar looks nice and the price looks normal until you work out the cost per ounce.
Why it matters: If you use tallow every day, a 2 oz jar lasts about two weeks at best. Then you buy another one, and another. Their 1.7 oz jar works out to $23.50 an ounce. Ours comes to $4.75 an ounce with bundles.
How to spot it: Divide the price by the ounces. Then look at photos where someone is holding the jar. If it fits in two fingers, you've found a thimble jar.
Our note: We won't sell a 2 oz jar. Ours are 4 oz, and we're always running bundle deals and free gifts, so there's usually a way to save even more.
"It's twice the size (4oz) for the same price as a 2oz jar of the other guys stuff." – Santiago G.

2. The "Premium" Excuse
What it is: A brand charges 2–4x more and says it's because their tallow is "higher quality."
Why it matters: We buy the same kind of ingredients, so we know what they cost. Grass-fed tallow isn't twice as expensive at one brand as at another. The extra money pays for the factory, the middleman and the marketing, not for what goes on your skin.
How to spot it: Ask what makes it "premium." If they can't point to a farm, the ingredient list or the process, the premium is the label.
Our note: Our prices are lower, and our tallow isn't worse for it. We cut out the costs that don't go into the jar.

3. The Ghost Kitchen
What it is: Many tallow brands never touch their own product. One factory pours the same balm into jars for dozens of different labels.
Why it matters: Every outside manufacturer adds a markup, and you pay for it. Nobody at the brand knows how that tallow was rendered, how fresh it is, or what was added to stretch it.
How to spot it: Look for the making. No pour videos, no workspace, and only product shots with perfect packaging usually means the work is outsourced.
Our note: Everything is made in-house in our New Jersey workspace. You can see exactly where your jar comes from, and since there's no factory markup, it goes straight from us to you. That's the main reason our price per ounce is lower.
"Love that you are not a corporation and that you care about your product. I tried another tallow before yours, whipped tallow, and you could tell they skimped on the tallow and it was just air." – Sharon V.

4. The Fourth-Ingredient Tallow
What it is: "Tallow" is printed big on the front of the jar, but it's fourth, fifth or sixth on the ingredient list, behind water, fillers and emulsifiers. Some brands even add yellow dye so it looks like real tallow.
Why it matters: Ingredients are listed in order of amount. When tallow comes fourth, you're paying tallow prices for mostly water and filler.
How to spot it: Read the ingredient list. If anything comes before tallow, you're paying for filler.
Our note: Don't take our word for it. Read our ingredient list. It's short on purpose: tallow first, then beeswax, raw honey, olive oil and essential oils. No water, no emulsifiers, no dye.
"I tried another brand first. They claimed to be all natural. Beef tallow was about the sixth ingredient after five chemicals I couldn't pronounce." – Christopher W.

5. The Bleach Job
What it is: Cheap tallow that's bleached and deodorized in a factory until it's snow-white and smells like nothing, then sold as "pure" and "odorless."
Why it matters: That heavy processing strips out much of the vitamins A, D, E and K, which are the reason people use tallow. You're paying for nutrients that have been processed out.
How to spot it: Look at the color and smell. If a balm is paper-white with zero scent and that's sold as a feature, it's been bleached.
Our note: We slow-render our tallow in-house and never bleach it. That's why it has a natural cream color and a faint, warm scent under the essential oils.
"Love the 'warm' natural scent it has. Great for deep moisture." – Elisabeth

6. The Costume Brand
What it is: A big company dressed up to look like a small family shop. Sometimes even the founder's photo is AI-generated.
Why it matters: If no real person stands behind the product, nobody answers when it doesn't work, and nobody honors a guarantee.
How to spot it: Find one real person with a real name. Email the brand and see whether a person writes back or just "the team."
Our note: We're Kevin and Rey. We started TryTallow to fix our own skin. Email us and a real person answers, usually Honey, who runs our customer service. (Yes, that's her real name.)
"I appreciate the emails from Rey with the helpful hints… I am delighted to support 'Jersey Boys.'" – Jane B.
